The Importance of Judicious Timing Belt Change

timing belt, also called a cambelt, is responsible for synchronizing the rotation of camshafts and crankshafts.  It ensures that each intake and exhaust stroke of the cylinder results in the engine valves opening and closing correctly.  It also prevents the pistons from striking the valves in an interference engine.  The timing belt has teeth on the inside to enable the synchronization to take place.  It operates quietly and is lighter and cheaper than gear drives.  Timing belt change has to take place as per the recommendations of the manufacturer.  Failure to do so could prove catastrophic for the vehicle engine.

The Right Time for Timing Belt Change

You know that your timing belt is due for a change when you hear odd noises coming from the engine, but be aware that a ticking sound could also be an indication of low oil pressure.  The check engine light may come on and keep flashing when your timing belt is due to be replaced.  If the timing belt is worn out and slips, it can cause the vehicle engine to be out of sync and misfire, and if the teeth of your timing belt are worn off or fall off, there could be slippage and stalling of your engine when changing gears.  The timing belt should be changed as per the service manual of your vehicle, but if your vehicle is showing any of the signs above then it’s best to get it checked as soon as possible.

Functions of A Timing Belt

The timing belt is responsible for correct airflow in your engine.  It is the link between the two critical halves of the car engine.  The timing belt performs under great pressure and due to its importance in the smooth functioning of your vehicle, it is important to change it as soon as it needs it.  This will also ensure there is no permanent damage to your vehicle due to malfunction.  If by chance the timing belt breaks, the car engine usually stops functioning and this could cause extensive damage to the car.

Importance of Resetting the Timing Belt Correctly

The timing belt functions appropriately at a certain tension with the help of the timing belt tensioner, therefore, when you change the timing belt, it is important that it is set again correctly.  The instructions in the repair manual have to be followed accurately to ensure that the engine functions smoothly again without any problems such as lack of power, misfiring, vibration, or any other issues.
